Periwinkle,
Seen sailing here in Biscayne bay. I built Periwinkle at
Hempstead Marine on the Miami River (Florida),
completing her in 1975. The design was by Girard DeWitt, who was inspired
by his ketch "Autant" which was designed by William Hand. The
construction was the same: strip-planking edge-nailed with 4" galvanized
boat nails, and diagonal planking inside. Both boats were pure-sail - no
engines. The intent was to design a boat that could be built by someone
with little or no experience (that was me at the time), and little or no money
(that was also me). I sailed Periwinkle to New York's South Street Seaport
Museum, where I worked for a couple years, and then sailed out to Mystic, CT
where Periwinkle was docked while I worked at a marina. I sold her when I
moved back to NY in 1979, and have no idea what happened after that. If
anyone has any information, or questions, I'd be happy to hear from them.
Thanks, Russ
